A matter of chemistry tells the story of Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant scientist who sees her life change when she becomes the star of a cooking show on television.
Elizabeth Zott is a talented chemist who just wants to do her research in peace. Unfortunately, in the early 1960s, the scientific community did not take a very egalitarian view of gender. At the institute where she works, men silence and sabotage her on a daily basis. They all seem determined to go to the last consequences to disrupt his career.
All but one. Calvin Evans, the introverted and brilliant researcher idolized at the institute, is the only one who sees Elizabeth beyond appearances and treats her as an equal. Contrary to all expectations, he falls in love with her intelligence, and the chemistry that arises between them is overwhelming.
But life is unpredictable like science. So, a few years later, Elizabeth finds herself raising her young daughter with the help of just her dog and a neighbor and, by a whim of fate, becomes the biggest star of the most watched and loved television show in the United States, Dinner at Six.
Her unusual approach to cooking proves revolutionary and she ends up becoming the nation’s greatest phenomenon. But not everyone is happy with her success, because, deep down, Elizabeth is not just teaching how to cook, but challenging women to think—and to transform their role in the world.
